This is a temporary part-time “extra help" at-will position. Extra help positions work less than 1,000 hours per fiscal year (July 1 - June 30) subject to budget availability and agency needs.Pay (DOQ):

About the OpportunityThe City of Ventura is seeking a motivated and mechanically inclined Fleet Maintenance Intern to join our Public Works Department. This internship provides hands-on experience in automotive and diesel maintenance within a municipal fleet environment. Under the supervision of senior technicians, the Intern will gain practical exposure to the tools, standards, and safety practices required to maintain a diverse fleet of City vehicles and equipment, including police and fire vehicles, heavy equipment, and alternative-fuel vehicles.
This role is designed to foster workforce development through the development of foundational technical skills, while also contributing to shop productivity and team efficiency. The schedule is flexible, with the opportunity to work up to 20 hours per week.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assist senior technicians with preventive maintenance services, including oil changes, fluid checks, tire inspections, and basic component replacements.
- Support basic diagnostics and minor repair work on gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
- Help maintain and organize shop tools, equipment, and work areas to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
- Assist with vehicle inspections and documentation in accordance with department procedures and safety standards.
- Gain exposure to municipal fleet operations, including maintenance of emergency response vehicles, heavy equipment, and alternative-fuel vehicles.
- Perform other related duties as assigned in support of Fleet Services operations and learning objectives.
Minimum Qualifications - RequiredCombination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Desirable: related experience and knowledge of common tools and the operation of small motorized equipment.
Licenses: Possession of a valid California Class C driver license and an acceptable drivers record, or ability to obtain driver's license prior to appointment, may be required.
