The Foreman performs supervisory and skilled technical work for county road and bridge crews in an assigned district. Employee is responsible for supervising maintenance of various county machinery and vehicles. Work involves supervising and participating in construction and maintenance of roads and bridges, and inspecting work performed. This position also inspects work sites to ensure use of proper safety precautions. Employee is also responsible for determining and obtaining equipment, tools, and materials necessary to perform assignments and performing routine personnel administration functions pertaining to subordinates.

Examples of Duties

Oversees all personnel functions of department, including disciplining, interviewing, and hiring employees; conducts employee evaluations.

Schedules and oversees all daily work assignments of employees; completes daily reports as necessary.

Inspects work sites for quality of work as well as for compliance with all established laws, policies, procedures, and safety precautions.

Ensures employees receive proper training on all processes of the department.

Maintains an on call status to respond to emergency and non-emergency situations as necessary.

Trouble shoots equipment issues and determines problem; fixes problem or schedules for equipment to be repaired as necessary.

Prepares and approves budget and purchase order requisitions.

Regular and punctual attendance is required.

May receive and investigate complaints from the general public and other departments.

Directs supervises, and participates in activities of county road and bridge construction and maintenance; ensures all established policies and procedures are followed.

Prepares list of possible roads to be overlaid or seal coated, including a total cost estimate; prepares cost estimates related to projects as necessary.

Communicates with vendors to coordinate delivery and supply of asphalt needed to complete scheduled job.

Obtains equipment, tools, and materials necessary to perform assignments; routes equipment to proper job site.

Communicates with landowners and/or utility companies to obtain right of ways and permission to work on property.

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or GED and a minimum six years of experience in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience required.

Depending on the area of assignment, other certifications and licenses may be required for this position.

Road Foreman

Must possess a Class C driver’s license issued by the State of Texas.

Class A Commercial Driver’s License with “N” endorsement issued by the State of Texas preferred.
