Public Works Technician I - Vegetation
Description
Overview The Public Works Technician I's main objective is to maintain and mow the City's rights-of-ways and drainage ditches, while operating various tools and equipment, such as trucks, trailers, zero turn mowers, chainsaws, weed-eaters, blowers, and pole-saws. This position requires you to be on-call and able to work outside regular hours and/or overtime as needed.
Responsibilities • Obeys all traffic laws while operating fleet vehicle and equipment from one location to another
• Operate on even or uneven terrain such as streets & earthen rights-of- way
• Performs daily Pre/Post-trip inspections on all types of equipment and vehicles
• Follows the Traffic control standards as per the Texas MUTCD Work Zone Traffic Control Guide
• Directs traffic control at job site by Flagging, cones, barrels and barricades
• Sets up message boards, water barrier, Type I, II, II Barricade during normal & emergency operations
• Operates vehicles to different locations, driving on drainage ditch rights-of-way and vehicle inspection
• Picks up trash on streets and ditch right-of-way prior to mowing
• Operates motorized equipment around poles, signs, guardrails, inlets, cut tree limbs, blow grass off streets and sidewalks, operates tools to maintain R.O.W. and drainage system
• Works On-Call Duty rotation schedule and must be able to work different rotation shift under emergency responses
• Performs with a professional mind set and be able to lead a team
• Keeps materials stock in vehicles assignment and must communicate when supply/materials are low
• Works in high traffic areas, confined spaces and/or elevated conditions and must be able to evaluate safe work conditions
• Communicates with internal or external customers and be professional under any conditions
• Ensures proper communication with the foreman, work coordinator, planner/ scheduler, and assistant director
• Completes daily reports and work orders
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work • Non-Exempt - Full-Time - On-Call Duty rotation schedule and must be available to work different rotation shifts under emergency response
• Monday - Thursday, 6:30 am - 5:30 pm or Tuesday - Friday, 06:30am - 5:30pm
• Must be available to work additional hours as needed
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement
• In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services

Minimum Qualifications • High School Diploma/GED
• No prior experience required
Licenses and Certifications Required • A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hiring
Required within six (6) months of hire • Certification in Traffic Control & Flagging

Basis of Rating A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview
