We're on the lookout for a dynamic, knowledgeable, skilled and experienced hands-on GIS leader to join our innovative team. In this position, you will play a pivotal role in our organization by guiding the management, maintenance, growth and direction of the City's GIS platforms and other geodata sets. With your unique skills, you will lead the growth of the City's GIS program, overseeing GIS layers for public safety, utilities and public works asset management, permitting, and more. The incumbent will interact with City management and end-users. The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional ability to effectively communicate with staff, consultants, contractors, and other city stakeholders.

The position reports to the Applications and Analytics division manager in Information Technology Department (ITD) and manages the enterprise GIS environment, providing GIS-based solutions to City departments from start to finish, including the design, development, implementation and maintenance of geospatial applications from concept through requirements definition, design, and implementation with several small and large projects already in the pipeline.

Under general direction of an Information Technology Manager, supervises, coordinates, monitors, and supports a City-wide Geographic Information System (GIS) program and oversees GIS functions; develops, coordinates, implements, maintains GIS including layers, tables and system interfaces; manages GIS Service Level Agreements (SLAs); participates in and/or manages GIS projects to include schedule and resource planning; recommends hardware, software and staffing requirements for GIS; supervises the work of GIS staff; and performs related work as required. revises, improves, updates, and maintains existing map and data layers; participates in or manages mapping processes, upgrades, and implementation projects; provides training and technical support to technical staff and end users; closely coordinates and works with departmental managers, mapping data owners, end-users, public officials, the public, vendors, and project teams; executes GIS components of the Information Technology Strategic Plan; assists in the development and management of the unit’s performance measures and budget; supervises and manages staff within the unit; operates as the subject matter expert; and performs other duties as assigned.

DISINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The GIS Coordinator is the highest level in the classification series. The classification of GIS Coordinator is distinguished from the higher-level Information Technology Manager in that the Information Technology Manager is responsible for the overall administration of the division. This classification is further distinguished from the lower-level GIS Specialist II in that the GIS Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the City-wide Geographic Information System (GIS) program and GIS functions. Coaches the assigned staff on the most complex GIS operational and project tasks and has full supervisory responsibility for GIS staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading reports and work-related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal customer service. The need to lift, drag and push equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds is also required. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodation.

NOTE: A Mater’s of Science degree in Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, Urban Planning, or related field may be substituted for one year of experience.

EXAM PROCESS

Applications will be competitively screened based on the minimum qualifications of this position.Based upon a review of the application materials, the most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the oral examination process scheduled for Wednes day, January 28 and/or Thursday, January 29, 2026 . (Note: The examination process may be changed as deemed necessary by the Director of Human Resources.)

SELECTION PROCESS

Those candidates that receive a passing score on the examination will be placed on an eligibility list for up to one year, in accordance with the City's Civil Service Rules and Administrative Policies. Top candidates on the eligibility list will be invited to participate in an in-person selection interview with the department tentatively scheduled for the week of February 9, 2026.

Any candidate that is selected by the hiring department will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment process, which may consist of a background history check, as well as a medical exam(s) administered by a City selected physician(s) before hire. Prior to starting work, all newly-hired employees will be fingerprinted to check conviction history. A conviction history will not necessarily disqualify an applicant from appointment; however, failure to disclose conviction history will result in refusal of employment or termination. Positions which are covered by the Department of Transportation regulations are required to submit to a pre-employment drug test and to random drug and alcohol testing.
