POSITION OVERVIEW:


Under general supervision of the Senior Project Manager, the Construction Coordinator assists in planning and overseeing capital improvement projects for enforcement and compliance with City contract specifications. Assists in providing oversight and guidance to Construction Inspectors and assigned technical staff. Performs comprehensive construction management duties including contract administration of improvement projects and providing oversight and guidance to field personnel. Coordinates the management of construction projects, including capital improvement projects; coordinates assigned activities with various divisions, outside agencies and the general public. Coordinates, schedules, assigns, monitors, and inspects work of contractors in the performance of various construction projects. Perform related duties as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Senior Project Manager. No regular supervision of staff is exercised, but this position provides oversight and guidance to staff as it relates to assigned projects.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This position is a single position class. Receiving general direction from the Senior Project Manager, the incumbent performs a variety of technical and management work of considerable difficulty, oversees and provides guidance to lower level professional and/or technical staff involved in the investigation, quality control, quality assurance, and/or inspection of construction projects. The incumbent oversees the construction of major capital projects. This position oversees and provides guidance to contractors and other professionals necessary to design and construct projects.

Qualifications / Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of/Skill in/Ability to:

Procedures, practices, methods, materials and equipment required to perform construction projects, to include, but not limited to, facilities, utilities, parking lots, paving, road widening, sidewalks and curbing work

Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in construction management, civil engineering, business administration, or related field, and four (4) years of experience in construction or project management with demonstrated experience in project management of public projects.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is a position that requires visiting construction job sites and being able to physically verify work performed. Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; to inspect various commercial and residential development sites, including traversing uneven terrain, climbing ladders, stairs, and other temporary or construction access points; to attend meetings and to operate a motor vehicle; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen and to make inspections; color vision to identify materials, structures, wires, and pipes; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to fifty (50) pounds and heavier weights with the use of proper equipment. Independent travel throughout the assigned area is required.
