MECHANICAL HELPER

job descriptionA Mechanical Helper supports journey-level technicians with basic tasks such as passing tools, lifting materials and cleaning work areas. Responsibilities include cutting and threading pipes, using hand and power tools, assisting with equipment setup and performing general maintenance and repair. The role also involves cleaning, routine inspections and part replacement, as well as helping with welding preparation and other duties as needed for training purposes or to meet technological changes or emergencies. The role also involves driving a City vehicle to pick up and deliver supplies, materials and equipment as needed.

PREVIOUS REQUIREMENT(S)/MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S)
• Completion of a course in automotive mechanics, machine shop, welding, plumbing, pipefitting or any other mechanical craft course from the Los Angeles Unified School District, or a college or trade school; or
• Six months of full-time paid experience in mechanical work; or
• Completion of eight months in the Utility Pre-Craft Trainee training program sponsored by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
