LOCATION:
WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT, WATER RECLAMATION PLANTS SECTION, DESERT MAINTENANCE GROUP, PALMDALE

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
To perform progressively more skilled mechanical maintenance and repairs on a variety of cars, trucks, tractors, trailers, and other diesel-powered and EV vehicles, and special-purpose, bio-solids processing equipment.

JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision from a Supervisor of Treatment Plant Maintenance, the incumbents' duties can involve driving, examining, locating, and repairing mechanical defects in a variety of utility equipment, including cars, trucks, utility trucks, two-axle and three-axle trucks, tractor-trailer or semi-trailer units, skip loaders, conveyor-driven loaders, biosolids composters, and crawlers; making minor and major mechanical repairs, including adjustments, tune-ups, and overhauls; disassembling and replacing worn parts; installing new parts; adjusting, repairing, rebuilding, and replacing fuel injectors, starting motors, transmissions, differentials, brakes, air conditioners, clutches, and steering gears; diagnosing and correcting electrical problems; overhauling hydraulic lift and steering assemblies, hydraulic motors, pumps, and accessories, and accomplishing similar mechanical tasks; operating equipment that is under repair; using welding equipment on equipment parts; and performing related duties as required.

This job may be filled at only an experienced level. The DIESEL EQUIPMENT MECHANIC is the journey level class of the series. Incumbents perform a wide variety of skilled tasks utilizing a comprehensive knowledge of the trade.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must possess a California Class B Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement within six months of appointment -AND- Four years of experience performing progressively responsible repairs to diesel-powered equipment. Twelve units of college coursework or completion of one year of a two-year trade school in diesel mechanic technology or a closely related program may be considered in lieu of one year of the required experience. Graduation from a two-year trade school in diesel mechanic technology or a closely related program may be considered in lieu of two years of the required experience.

EXAMPLES OF ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The competitive selection process for the DIESEL EQUIPMENT MECHANIC level may cover a knowledge of the principles of diesel engine operation, adjustment and repair; practices, tools and equipment used in vehicle and engine repair; principles of hydraulic systems operation, adjustment and repair; occupational hazards and safety regulations of the trade. The ability to make mechanical repairs on a variety of gas, diesel-powered and EV vehicles; use specialized mechanical tools and equipment; diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical problems; repair and rebuild engines, transmissions, differentials, brakes, clutches, and other equipment moving parts.

RETIREMENT





COMPENSATION

Employees receive annual salary increases until reaching step 5 of the salary range and are provided with opportunities to promote. Cost of living adjustments are implemented annually in accordance with labor agreements.

13 paid holidays and one-half paid holiday depending on the employee's work schedule.

TUITION REIMBURSEMENT
Employees may be eligible for tuition reimbursement for approved accredited course work.

STUDENT LOAN PAYMENT REIMBURSEMENT
For some bargaining units, the Districts will provide student loan payment reimbursements for principal or interest paid by the employee on a qualified education loan incurred by the employee for the education of the employee. The annual maximum reimbursement is $5,250 and the lifetime reimbursement limit is $21,000.
