About the Position

Under the guidance of experienced supervisors and engineering managers, Engineers at DPW perform a broad range of duties related to the planning, design, and review of public infrastructure. From roads and bridges to flood control systems and traffic safety enhancements, you’ll be directly involved in work that shapes our region.

Engineer I/II/III is a flexibly staffed series. Placement is based on qualifications and experience, with clear promotional opportunities as your career progresses.

INITIAL APPOINTMENT/ADVANCEMENT

Employment within the County offers Engineers excellent opportunities for advancement within the series as well as advancement into leadership roles. Engineers are hired at the levels listed below, and advance within the series, according to their qualifications. Incumbents may advance within the series upon meeting qualifications for the higher levels and receiving a satisfactory work progress report. Areas of Opportunity

Openings are available across several Public Works divisions:

Transportation Design Division
Assist with the in-house and consultant-led design of road and bridge projects. Contribute to plan preparation, construction support, and design reviews.

Flood Control Design & Operations
Support the planning and implementation of projects that reduce flood risk and improve stormwater infrastructure.

Permits & Development Review
Review private development plans for engineering impacts, process encroachment permits, and ensure compliance with County and State standards.

Traffic Engineering

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Background: Incumbent must successfully complete a background check prior to appointment.

Travel: Travel to various sites throughout the County is required; a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be provided at time of hire. Mileage reimbursement is available.

Physical: This position includes the following demands: frequent sitting; occasional walking, standing, bending, and squatting; fine manipulation in both hands; continuously reach or work below the shoulder level; must frequently demonstrate near vision and occasionally demonstrate far vision; occasionally lift or carry ten (10) pounds or less; occasionally work near equipment and machinery on rough, uneven, rocky, or slippery surfaces; occasionally exposed to dust, gas, toxic materials, noise, and extremes in temperature and/or humidity; occasionally use protective equipment or clothing.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet ONE of the following education requirements along with the corresponding experience and certification/license requirements for each level:

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT OPTION 1: If applicant possesses a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field, then they must meet the following experience and certification/license requirements:

Engineer II
One (1) year of professional experience working as a civil engineer or a closely related field of engineering.

Possession of Engineer-in-Training (EIT) -OR- Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) certification.
Engineer III
Two (2) years of professional experience working as a civil engineer or a closely related field of engineering.

Possession of Professional Engineer (PE) license in Civil Engineering with the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT OPTION 2: If applicant possesses Forty-Five semester units (68 quarter units) in Civil Engineering or a closely related field, of which 35 units must be upper division, then they must meet the following experience and certification/license requirements:

Engineer II
Three (3) years of professional experience working as a civil engineer or a closely related field of engineering.

Engineer III Four (4) years of professional experience working as a civil engineer or a closely related field of engineering.
Possession of Professional Engineer (PE) license in Civil Engineering with the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs.
Experience Substitution: Every four (4) years of experience as an Engineering Technician IV or higher with San Bernardino County may be treated as equivalent to one (1) year of the required engineering experience.
Education Substitution: Possession of Engineer-in-Training (EIT) -OR- Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) certification may substitute the upper division requirement.

Note: Candidates must provide a list of completed coursework unless the candidates possess a Bachelor's degree in a qualifying area. Qualifying degrees or coursework must be completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education. Degree Equivalency Evaluation: Degrees or coursework completed outside the U.S. must be accompanied with an evaluation report from a reputable credential evaluation service showing equivalency to degrees or coursework completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education.

Desired Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree from an ABET accredited school in Civil Engineering is highly desirable.
