Introduction

This is a promotional recruitment - only permanent and/or probationary County employees are eligible to apply.

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications for this classification will be invited to attend the written examination on Tuesday, August 5, 2025 . Applicants who receive a passing score on the written examination will be invited to attend the oral examination on Tuesday, August 19, 2025 (a second examination day will be added on Wednesday, August 20, 2025 , if necessary, based upon the size of the applicant pool). Please note that this position may require incumbents to work unusual and/or prolonged work schedules.

DEFINITION

To plan, organize, direct, and supervise work on an assigned shift or unit within the Sheriff's Office; to instruct and assist subordinates in performance of their assigned duties; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Sergeant level recognizes positions that perform full, first-line supervisory responsibilities including planning, assigning, and evaluating the work of subordinates and is responsible for a program area within a work unit or department.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general direction from a Sheriff's Lieutenant or other designated authority.

Exercises direct and indirect supervision over sworn and non-sworn personnel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is typically performed outdoors in all weather conditions and in an indoor office environment with controlled temperature conditions. Duties are performed in close proximity to moving vehicles, individuals who may be dangerous and/or uncooperative, firearms and other weapons, and other environmental conditions related to law enforcement field work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and Training:
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

Four years of increasingly responsible law enforcement experience, at least two years of which was obtained as a Deputy Sheriff II with the Placer County Sheriff's Department.

Training:

Completion of the twelfth grade or GED.

Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Written Examination (40%)

The written examination may include multiple choice, true/false, fill-in, matching, and/or essay type questions directly related to the required knowledge and abilities for this classification.

Oral Examination (60%)

The oral examination will be conducted by a panel of raters who will assess and rate the degree to which each applicant demonstrates the knowledge and abilities required for this classification. Applicants’ responses to a series of job related questions, as well as their education and experience, will be rated in relation to the requirements for this classification.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

Prior to the date of hire, applicants must undergo a fingerprint test by the Department of Justice, pass a medical examination (which may include a drug screening and possibly a psychological evaluation), sign a constitutional oath, and submit proof of U.S. citizenship or legal right to remain and work in the U.S. For some positions, applicants may also be required to submit proof of age, undergo a background investigation (which may include a voice stress analysis and/or a polygraph), and/or be bonded. Additionally, positions in law enforcement classifications and those supporting law enforcement functions will be required to complete a conviction history questionnaire prior to or during the interview process. Applicants for positions with access to Medi-Cal billing software or who are licensed providers must clear the Federal Exclusion List, credentialing, and social security verification. Failure to clear these requirements may result in an employment offer being withdrawn.

The eligible list resulting from this recruitment may be certified as a substitute list for a substantially similar classification. For this purpose, a substantially similar classification is one at a lower level in the same classification (example: entry level vs. journey level) and/or a similar classification (similar work performed, similar training and experience qualifications required).
