The Probation Department is a law enforcement agency within the County of Monterey, with 5 major divisions: 4 operational divisions (Adult, Juvenile, Juvenile Hall, and Youth Center), and one infrastructure division, Administration, which includes Finance, Personnel, Training, Grants and Contracts, and Information Technology. The Department has about 300 permanent positions (with the majority being sworn officers), in addition to temporary staff and interns. Probation is a fast-paced environment which requires excellent customer services skills, personal initiative, adaptive thinking, strong ethics and commitment while maintaining a sense of family and camaraderie.

Position Summary
The Monterey County Probation Department is seeking a dedicated and experienced Senior Juvenile Institutions Officer to lead and support the management of juvenile detention facilities. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, a deep understanding of juvenile justice principles, and the ability to mentor and guide junior officers. Candidates must demonstrate excellent communication, conflict resolution, and crisis management abilities, along with a commitment to fostering a safe, rehabilitative environment for young offenders.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a s easoned officer that has experience working in a juvenile detention facility and has demonstrated a consistent commitment to youth rehabilitation, facility safety, and staff development. This candidate possesses in-depth knowledge of juvenile detention policies, behavioral intervention strategies, and trauma-informed care practices. They are adept at de-escalation techniques, managing crisis situations, and maintaining a safe, structured environment while treating juveniles with dignity and respect.

Experience:
Two years of experience working within a juvenile institution setting, performing a variety of custodial and rehabilitative duties comparable to those of the Juvenile Institutions Officer II class in Monterey County

AND/OR
Education:
College course work and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Sociology, Criminology or a closely related field.
