Description
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) position serves as a member of the Missouri - 1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team (MO-1 DMAT). This position is responsible for performing a limited range of health care duties ranging from standard to routine during a disaster or major emergency. This position reports to the directly to a Supervisory Paramedic or Supervisory Nurse when deployed. Administratively, this position reports to the Chief Paramedic.
Job Description: - Carries out a limited range of basic life support and first aid procedures for patients, i.e., temperature, pulse and respiratory rate, checks pupillary size and muscular coordination.
- Under supervision, performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation, applies splints to broken or suspected broken bones and applies dressings to wounds to stop bleeding and prevent infection. Assists the medical staff in applying casts, repairing wounds, etc.
- Secures emergency equipment for use by the medical staff, i.e., oxygen and respirators. Provides for patients care and comfort.
- Observes patients for changes in attitudes, behavior, and physical condition. Assesses routine physical condition of patients and reports changes to his/her supervisor. Records patient’s conditions.
- Obtains litters or assists in the physical transporting and evacuation of patients. Loads and unloads patients from ambulances, aircraft and other conveyances.
- Collects specimens for clinical laboratory analyses.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: - Must possess a valid and unrestricted Emergency Medical Technician license to practice in the State of Missouri.
- Preferred one year of specialized experience directly related to the NDMS Response Team position, equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service.
- Completion of NIMS courses: ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-700 and ICS-800.
- Degree or diploma from a National Registries EMT program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
Knowledge, Skill & Abilities: - Knowledge of the NIMS Incident Command System.
- Knowledge of other disaster response organizations and their missions, i.e., FEMA, Red Cross, Non-Governmental Organizations, etc. for the purpose of exchanging disaster-related information.
- Knowledge of the Federal Response Plan and the Missouri Emergency Operations Plan.
- Ability to provide leadership and supervision of staff.
- Ability to effectively manage people.
- Ability to develop strategic plans to meet established goals.
- Skill in critical thinking processes.
- Experience in oral and written communication to prepare reports, develop policies, procedures, present proposals, and provide advice, guidance and assistance.
- Ability in dealing with people and organizations in a diplomatic manner.
- Experience in using terminology for describing patient reactions, patient care and medication for the purpose of instructing patients.
- Ability to set priorities, plan, and implement activities to maximize efficiency.
- Ability to establish effective relationships with the MO - 1 DMAT community to exchange information on programs, ideas, etc.
- Ability to use a computer to store, retrieve and compile data and prepare reports.
- Ability to effectively organize and plan during crisis situations.
- The ability to apply emergency medical and basic life support principles, procedures and techniques to patients requiring advanced emergency care.

Physical Requirements: - Occasional heavy lifting/moving patients and objects up to 80 lbs.
- Long periods of standing/walking on uneven surfaces.
- Considerable bending, stooping, reaching, etc.
- Long periods of work without rest: up to 12 hours.
- Working in a variety of climatic conditions and extreme weather.
- Ability to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces.
- Ability to respond quickly to sounds.
- Ability to see and respond to dangerous situations.
- Ability to wear personal protective gear correctly for upwards of 12 hours.
- Ability to work in an austere environment.
- This work may also require defending oneself or others against physical attack.
Work Environment:The work environment involves moderately high risks or discomforts, which require special precautions, e.g., working with risk of exposure to contagious disease, radiation or infection or in working with emotionally disturbed patients. Precautions are routine for nearly all situations. This position may be required to use protective clothing or gear. The work environment may involve high risks of exposure to potentially dangerous situations where conditions cannot be controlled.

Salary:
$21-$23 per Hour
