The City of Ventura is now accepting applications for the position of
Police Commander (Promotional Only).
Under general direction, plans, manages and oversees the daily activities of a division within the police department, or directs the activities of a specialized police function.Directs and supervises law enforcement officers and civilian technical and clerical staff. This position wears a uniform and works rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Police Commander is a management-level classification within the Police job series, assigned to any division or section in the department and overseeing the operations of a division or specialized function. Commanders participate in the formulation of department goals and devise long-range strategy to accomplish those goals.
Police Sergeant: is a first-line supervisory classification, exercising direct supervision over staff, while continuing to perform the full range of police officer duties.
Examples of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Organizes and oversees the work of a division within the Police Department. May also be assigned to any collateral duties such as command of a specialized function. Plans, supervises and coordinates the activities of assigned staff engaged in receiving and responding to requests for police assistance, information and complaints.
- Participates in the development, implementation and modification of department goals and objectives. Develops, implements, and monitors designated section goals, objectives and policies. Researches innovative police management methods.
- Analyzes emergency situations, formulating and executing appropriate plans for response. Directs investigations, interviews and inspections. Performs community-based policing with a familiarization between law enforcement and community residents. Solves problems collaboratively. Participates in training programs. Formulates and carries out specific in-service training programs. Stays current with trends and innovations in the field of law enforcement.
- Supervises, monitors, motivates, and evaluates the work of assigned sworn and civilian staff. Participates in the selection of staff. Conducts performance evaluations and takes appropriate disciplinary action as necessary. Resolves personnel issues.
- Assists in preparing the department budget, recommending adjustments as necessary. Monitors and approves budget expenditures and implements adjustments. Writes reports and maintains records.
- Attends meetings and addresses elected officials, the public and various special interest groups regarding the goals and operations of the department.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS A combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and five years of sworn law enforcement experience, including one year of experience as a Police Sergeant with the City of Ventura Police Department, are required. A Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or Public Administration, or a related subject, is preferred.
Certificate: Possession of a California Basic POST certificate is required.

All applicants will be screened according to the minimum qualifications as outlined in the job posting. Those meeting minimum qualifications will be invited to two panel interviews that will be held on the same day. The most successful candidates from the panel interviews will move forward to the Police Chief for a selection interview and will be notified of the Chief’s interview date and time later.
