The City of Ventura is now accepting applications for the position of
Assistant Police Chief (Promotional Only).
The Assistant Police Chief, under general direction, plans, directs, manages, and supervises the daily activities of the Police Department. The position provides high-level technical and administrative staff assistance to the Police Chief. The Assistant Police Chief may assume command of the Department in the absence of the Police Chief. This position wears a uniform and requires work on evenings, weekends, holidays, and under hazardous conditions.
The Assistant Police Chief is responsible for all operations of the Police Department. The Assistant is distinguished from the Police Chief in that the latter has complete responsibility for overall department operations.
This position is designated as "at will," serving at the pleasure of the Police Chief, and subject to discharge without cause and without the right of appeal.
Examples of DutiesDuties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assists the Chief in the development of goals, objectives, policies and priorities of the department and innovative municipal law enforcement practices. Researches modern police management methods. Performs community-based policing with a familiarization between law enforcement and community residents. Solves problems collaboratively. Evaluates and enforces rules, procedures and policies for efficient operation of the department and recommends changes. May assist the Chief in preparing ordinances.
- Organizes and oversees the work of a division within the police department. Plans, directs, supervises, and coordinates the activities of sworn personnel. Reviews and approves recommendations for response to emergency situations and oversees plans to meet goals. Reviews and approves staff assignments and directs the implementation of deployment for assigned personnel. Coordinates special enforcement teams. Directs investigations, interviews, and inspections. May command the department during emergencies.
- Supervises, monitors, motivates, and evaluates staff. Reviews performance evaluations and takes appropriate disciplinary action as necessary. Resolves personnel problems. Assists in the development and implementation of departmental in-service training. Acts as department liaison with Risk Management in the coordination of workers compensation and public liability matters.
- Assists in preparing the department budget, recommending adjustments as necessary. Monitors and approves budget expenditures and implements adjustments. Writes reports and maintains records.
- Addresses elected officials, the public, and various special interest groups regarding the goals and operations of the department. Confers with citizens and City officials on law enforcement problems.
- Performs other duties as required.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to seven years of law enforcement experience, including one year of supervisory experience at the rank of Police Commander with the City of Ventura is required. A bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Business or Public Administration, or a related field is highly desirable. Applicants must have completed probation at the time of application.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATES
License: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record is required.
Certificate: Must possess and maintain a California Basic POST certificate.
