The City of Ventura is now accepting applications for the position of Assistant Police Chief (Promotional Only).

The Assistant Police Chief, under general direction, plans, directs, manages, and supervises the daily activities of the Police Department. The position provides high-level technical and administrative staff assistance to the Police Chief. The Assistant Police Chief may assume command of the Department in the absence of the Police Chief. This position wears a uniform and requires work on evenings, weekends, holidays, and under hazardous conditions.

The Assistant Police Chief is responsible for all operations of the Police Department. The Assistant is distinguished from the Police Chief in that the latter has complete responsibility for overall department operations.

This position is designated as "at will," serving at the pleasure of the Police Chief, and subject to discharge without cause and without the right of appeal.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to seven years of law enforcement experience, including one year of supervisory experience at the rank of Police Commander with the City of Ventura is required. A bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Business or Public Administration, or a related field is highly desirable. Applicants must have completed probation at the time of application.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATES

License: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record is required.

Certificate: Must possess and maintain a California Basic POST certificate.

APPLICATION REVIEW AND SELECTION PROCESS:

All applicants will be screened according to the minimum qualifications as outlined in the job posting. Those meeting minimum qualifications will be invited to a panel interview. The most successful candidates from the panel interviews will move forward to the Police Chief for a selection interview and will be notified of the Chief’s interview date and time later.

Salary:

$190,147.15 - 254,797.09 Annually
