SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER-TEMPORARYDepartment: Public Safety - Police DivisionPay Grade: Temporary Pay TableFLSA Status: Non-ExemptPersonnel Status: Temporary Full Time JOB SUMMARY This position is responsible for performing the duties of a School Resource Officer for Auburn City Schools and the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws. This position reports to the Sergeant-Community Services.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS - Provides security and law enforcement presence at City School campuses and events and investigates crimes involving students.
- Serves as liaison between the Auburn Police Department, Auburn City Schools, and Juvenile Court.
- Testifies in school board hearings and court proceedings.
- Assists with safety planning for Auburn City School campuses and events.
- Conducts classes and speaks to various groups on relevant law enforcement subjects.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Qualifications: - Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of Auburn Police Department policies.
- Knowledge of Auburn City School rules, policies, and procedures.
- Knowledge of juvenile justice laws and procedures.
- Knowledge of local government operations, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs.
- Skill in performing law enforcement and criminal investigation activities.
- Skill in the use of computers, hardware, software, cellular phones, cameras, and other office equipment.
- Skill in public speaking, to include making presentations and teaching.
- Skill in the mentoring of students and in curriculum and lesson plan development.
- Skill in investigation, interview, and interrogation techniques used in law enforcement.
- Skill in the proper use of firearms.
- Skill in the operation of emergency vehicles.
- Skill in school safety assessment and safety planning.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The work is light to very heavy work, which requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work is typically performed while intermittently walking, sitting, standing, crouching, bending, or stooping. The employee uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
WORK ENVIRONMENT The work is typically performed in an office, various school environments and outdoor venues. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of specialized law-enforcement equipment and protective environments equipment.
This position is Temporary and not eligible for benefits.
