Summary Minimum Starting Salary: $113,793 - Depending on Qualifications The City of Waco Seeks Our organization is seeking a Controller to join our Finance team and play a pivotal role in driving the success of our accounting division. As the Controller, you will assist the Managing Director of Finance in overseeing all aspects of accounting operations, ensuring the timely and accurate analysis and reporting of financial and technical information. In this key position, you will organize and direct a wide range of Accounting division activities, providing professional-level support in essential areas such as payroll, accounts payable, cash management, and investments. Your analytical skills will be invaluable as you manage complex general accounting functions and evaluate financial issues and policies, recommending effective solutions. Collaborating with various City departments and public agencies, you will ensure high-quality financial services and coordinate efforts to meet organizational objectives.
Minimum Qualifications Required:- Bachelor's Degree Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration
- 6 years experience preferably with government accounting and/or financial reporting, including supervisory experience
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) from Texas State Board of Public Accountancy
- Texas Driver's License
Position Overview Under general supervision, assists the Managing Director of Finance in planning and directing Finance Department operations including Accounting, External Audit, Payroll, Treasury Management, Accounts Receivable, Accounting, Budget, Grants, and Accounts Payable, and managing compliance with City and department policies and procedures; supervises staff and develops complex financial reports, analyses, budgets, and contracts.
Essential Functions - Assists the Managing Director of Finance with managing Accounting division operations and staff and the timely and accurate analysis and reporting of financial and technical information.
- Assists with organizing and directing Accounting division activities and provides professional-level support to the Director in a variety of areas, including payroll, accounts payable, cash management, investments, fiscal studies, grants, City Council agenda items, Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) preparation, and other financial reports, and a variety of complex general accounting functions.
- Manages a variety of technical accounting functions for the City; evaluates and analyzes financial issues and policies and recommends solutions; coordinates work with other City departments and public agencies.
- Directs Accounting division operations; assures the quality of the financial activities, services, and work products; directs the Accounting division staff; plans, prioritizes and assigns tasks and projects; monitors work, develops staff skills and evaluates performance; meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve workload and technical issues; develops work plans and assures required deadlines are met; reviews work and verifies the accuracy of financial records.
- Uses knowledge of Finance Department policies and procedures, reviews, and processes technical accounting documents, develops financial reports and forecasts, analyzes technical accounting information, and develops recommendations and summary reports.
- Assists with contract management and technical reporting for a variety of programs and projects.
- May be required to respond afterhours, including holidays and weekends, in the event of a departmental or City-wide emergency.
