Traffic Sign Technician
Description
Job Summary Performs semi-skilled work in the design, construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signs and pavement markings within the City of Bryan. Essential Job Functions
Fabricates and installs signs, posts, delineators, barricades, cones, and pavement markings of all types.
Inspects traffic signs for compliance with current standards and regulations including sign condition, placement, and visibility; performs tasks such trimming vegetation, cleaning, repairing, and replacing signs as needed.
Loads/unloads trucks and trailers with supplies, materials, and equipment for installing, repairing, or replacing signs or deploying barricades.
Sets up traffic work zones, to include traffic barricades, cone transition lanes, and traffic warning signs when conducting sign/marking work in traffic areas.
Keeps records of sign installations and locations.
Operates high pressure power washer, paint machine and thermoplastic equipment in marking centerlines, parking lanes, and other traffic control needs; operates bitumen tar applicator to install raised reflective markers.
Handles special projects by installing traffic counting equipment and cameras including collecting and downloading data for traffic surveys.
Performs routine checks and preventive maintenance on equipment; identifies and reports equipment malfunctions; cleans equipment as needed.
Assists with maintaining inventory of materials in the sign shop and work truck.
Assists in the construction and repair of traffic signals as needed and in emergency situations under the supervision of a Traffic Signal Technician.
Attends and completes all required training to obtain/maintain required certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills.
Responds to emergency calls-out on critical sign repair and/or replacement and emergency road closures. Required to be on-call 24 hours a day for a period of 1 week at a time.
Reports any unsafe actions/conditions and other department or City policy violations immediately to management.
Performs related duties as required.
Responds regularly and promptly to work.
Minimum Qualifications Required:
At least one (1) year of work experience in traffic, construction, maintenance, and repair, or a similar semi-skilled labor or trades job that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job.
Preferred:
High School Diploma/ GED .
Experience in the fabrication of traffic signs and installation and maintenance of traffic signs and pavement markings.
Experience in utilizing traffic sign software programs to design and size signs and to create patterns and lettering in accordance with appropriate regulations, including the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices ( TMUTCD ).
Equivalent combinations of education, experience, certification, and training may be considered.
Licenses, Certifications & Special Requirements
Texas Class C driver’s license with a good driving record as measured by the City’s evaluation system.
Possession of IMSA Work Zone Certification or ability to obtain within two (2) years of employment.
Possession of IMSA Signs and Markings Level I Certification or ability to obtain within two (2) years of employment.
Ability to obtain Flagger Certification and complete required NIMS training within first six (6) months of hire.
Must be available to work a rotating schedule for standby/on-call and after hour support which includes evening, weekends, holidays, catastrophic weather events, and other similar emergencies. The employee will be required to carry a standby cell phone and shall promptly respond to calls.
Salary:
$19.00-$25.00/hour (depending on qualifications & certification)
