Wood Shop Technician - 0.75 Time Base
Description
Job Summary Provide safe and responsible operations of the School of Art Shop, Wood Shop, Milling Yard, studios, and classrooms, in order to facilitate instruction, research, creative, and scholarly activity of undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty.
Key Responsibilities - Research, source, maintain and repair a variety of specialized Woodworking equipment ensuring that all said equipment is safe accessible and operational for continuous use by students and faculty.
- Lead responsibilities for safe and effective operation of facilities and equipment including hiring, training, scheduling, and supervising Student Workers.
- Purchase and manage inventory, storage, and disposal of raw materials and supplies, which includes hazardous goods.
- Supervision of students in labs for safety - Under advisement of SOA faculty, supervise students in proper use and care of equipment, lab safety, and cleanup during open shop work periods. Oversee work-study students and student assistants, including the creation of ISA Shop Supervision schedules and routine maintenance and cleaning-log books.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities Advanced wood skills required. Ability to service wood and metal-related equipment. Welding, carpentry, and construction skills. Solid administration and budgeting skills. Basic teaching skills. Ability to take direction from faculty and work independently with little to no supervision. Ability to develop and troubleshoot facility projects; develop and plan facility upgrades. Strong communication and organization skills. Computer skills for inventory and record keeping. Basic Competency in C.A.D. and C.A.M. including experience working with and/or maintaining CNC equipment preferred. Ability to work with students and faculty in the use of equipment and application of processes toward creative goals.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience • Equivalent to three years of experience providing instructional support services for visual arts or related discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment related to the visual arts or related discipline required.
• Bachelor’s degree in Art strongly preferred.
• MFA in Art preferred.
• Supervisory experience preferred.
• Experience in working with contractors and trades including electricians, plumbers, carpenters, maintenance staff, etc preferred.
• Experience with physical inventories and property tracking.
Physical Summary - Heavy work - Job involves lifting more than 40 pounds. Approximately half of the incumbent's time will be spent walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, or climbing
Licenses / Certificates • A valid CA driver's license preferred.
Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on university business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.

Compensation Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $3,316 - $4,101 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.
CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $3,316 - $5,999 per month.
Benefits Excellent benefits through CalPERS (health, vision, dental), tuition fee waiver, generous vacation and sick leave, and 14 paid holidays each year.
Time Base 0.75 time-base, part-time.
Duration of Appointment This is a temporary position for 3 years with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
