Description
TPWD MISSION To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION :
Under the direction of the Lead Park Interpreter, the Groundskeeper performs entry-level grounds and building maintenance work and assists in the operation and maintenance of Bentsen Rio-Grande Valley State Park. Duties include, but are not limited to, grounds and building maintenance. Work involves caring for and maintaining the appearance of grounds and gardens and maintaining and caring for grounds keeping tools, supplies and equipment to include mowers, trimmers, power tools, tractors, vehicles and other equipment as needed. Performs general visitor assistance including drives electric tram with visitors, reservation, revenue collection, special events, providing visitor information concerning parks and regulations and prepares required reports. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.
NOTE : Position may fluctuate between full-time/part-time hours based on operational needs.
Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Education :
Completion of the 8th Grade.
Experience :
Experience in groundskeeping and maintenance work.
Licensure :
Must possess a valid State driver's license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
Experience :
Experience with identifying native grasses, plants, trees, shrubs and flowers.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :
Knowledge in general facility, grounds repair, and cleaning techniques.
Knowledge in landscaping and grounds maintenance techniques.
Knowledge in identifying, planting and care of native trees, shrubbery, flowers and grass.
Knowledge of basic math.
Skill in effective verbal and written communication.
Skill in the use of hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, vehicles, generators and other mechanical equipment.
Skill in the operation of motorized and gas operated equipment.
Skill in making independent, sound and timely decisions.
Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner.
Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
Ability to work as a member of a team.
Ability to maintain and care for hand and power tools.
Ability to use personal computer to prepare reports and keep records.
Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.
Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.
WORKING CONDITIONS :
Required to work 10 to 40 hours with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and days off other than Saturday, Sunday and Holidays.
Required to adjust to changing schedules.
Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.
Hours may be reduced or extended as needed through primary peak season October to April.
This position will fluctuate between part-time and full-time status throughout the term of employment. Changing from part-time to full-time and vice versa may impact the amount of leave accrued, eligibility for longevity and health insurance rates.
May be required to operate a State vehicle.
Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays.
Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures
