Essential FunctionsJOB SUMMARY:This is training-level, part-time work which may be administrative, paraprofessional or technical in scope. The exact nature of the work is dependent upon the specific department to which a position is assigned. Work is performed under direct supervision and is reviewed by a supervisor while in progress and upon completion.
Qualification GuidelinesREQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE:Graduation from high school and current enrollment in (or recent graduate of) an accredited college or university with a major course of study in the field of Public or Business Administration, Engineering, Social Sciences, Fire Science, Communications or a field related to specific assignment. Current enrollment in the junior-level or above may be desirable for certain designated positions. (Note: possession of a valid California Driver's License may be required for certain positions.)
REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL LEVELS:Knowledge of basic research and statistical research methods and techniques.
Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint programs.
Skill in preparing clear and concise written reports.
Skill in preparing routine visual aids or other communications tools.
REQUISITE ABILITIES:Ability to learn and follow municipal procedures, systems and regulations which affect the work.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
Part-time employees are appointed by and serve at the will of the Department Director. They are reviewed for merit salary advancement on a periodic basis. Generally, part-time employees are limited to no more than 1,000 hours of work per fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). Certain part-time employees, however, are permitted to exceed this limit.
Part-time employees participate in either the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS) or the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). Employees enrolled in PARS contribute 3.75% of salary with a matching City contribution. Employees enrolled in CalPERS contribute 6.75% - 14% of salary.
Select part-time positions are eligible to receive general leave benefits. General leave can be used for sick, vacation, or holiday time. To be eligible, part-time employees must have continuously worked for at least 520 hours before earning general leave.
