THE LIBRARY AND RECREATIONDEPARTMENT is dedicated to enriching the lives o San Rafael residents through discovery, learning, and play through programs and services that provide high community value. The Recreation Division operates with a $4.93 million budget and 18 FTE. Key facilities include the Albert J. Boro Community Center, Pickleweed Community Park, Terra Linda Pool and Terra Linda Community Center.

THE POSITION:

The City of San Rafael is seeking a full-time Program Coordinator to join our team at the Terra Linda Community Center/Pool. You will plan, coordinate and supervise recreation programs, events and activities, including planning, scheduling and implementing recreational activities; recruit, coordinate and supervise the activities of regular, temporary and volunteer staff; prepare program budgets and monitor expenditures; administer the rental, scheduling, use and maintenance of major recreation facilities. You will exercise judgement and initiative in the management of the Terra Linda Community Center/Pool.

• Provides direction to and supervises regular, temporary and volunteer staff, including selecting, monitoring, training, scheduling and determining work loads; assists with hiring, disciplinary and evaluation processes.
• Plans, evaluates and coordinates programs, classes, athletic activities and special events, including scheduling facilities, ensuring facilities are set up, scheduling trips and hiring coaches.
• Monitors the day-to-day operations of programs and events, including making site visits, handling and resolving complaints not requiring the attention of a supervisor and ensuring that programs and events have required materials and supplies.
• Formulates and organizes program plans and schedules for seasonal and year-round activities such as athletic leagues, aquatics programs, special events and day and summer camps.
• Acts as a liaison and representative with a variety of advisory boards, commissions, community groups, law enforcement agencies, schools, and councils.
• Creates program flyers, brochures, catalogs and newsletters, including determining content, layout, materials and distribution methods; prepares activity and operating reports.
• Enforces safety and operating procedures and provides for maintenance needs including compliance with health and safety codes and building codes.
• Books facility rentals for customers; attends to facility users needs, including permits and equipment; prints weekly event schedule and ensures that all setups are done, manages facility budget, including maintenance and supplies.

Ideal Candidate for the Program Coordinator is a positive, organized, and people-focused recreation professional who is excited to build great experiences for the community. You enjoy working with people, solving problems, and jumping in wherever needed to make programs run smoothly. This position supports both the Terra Linda Community Pool and the Terra Linda Community Center.

A major focus of this position is aquatics management, so we're looking for someone who is comfortable working in a busy pool environment and has an interest in developing their skill in aquatics safety, staffing, and programming. You'll help coordinate up to 100 seasonal aquatics staff, support staff training, manage contracts with outside user groups, oversee daily pool operations, and help ensure our programs are safe, welcoming, and fun.

The right person is organized and dependable, but also flexible and willing to get hands-on when things don't go according to plan. You don't need to know everything on day one--we're looking for someone who is eager to learn, takes initiative, communicates well, and is comfortable working as part of a team.

Most importantly, we're looking for someone who likes working with people and wants to make a difference in their community. Education and/or Experience/Other:

• Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in recreation administration, physical education, leisure services or a related field and two years full-time or its equivalent of recreation experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as listed above.
• Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.

Although not required at the time of hire, the ability to obtain the following certifications within the following timelines is required:

• American Red Cross Lifeguard Training - within 6 months of employment
• American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor - within one year of employment
• American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor - within one year of employment

This position is a regular position of the City's SEIU Local 1021 employee group and is eligible to receive benefits including but not limited to:

• MEDICAL | City group health coverage, with the City paying a fixed dollar amount toward the cost of the monthly insurance premium: Employee only: $998.00 | Employee plus one: $1,995.00 | Family: $2,520.00
• DENTAL | Premium fully paid for employee plus eligible dependents.
• VISION | Premium fully paid for employee. Family coverage at additional cost.
• VACATION LEAVE | 10 days annually, increases after 3 years of service
• SICK LEAVE | 12 days annually
• HOLIDAYS | 12 paid City holidays plus 1 floating holiday per year

• LIFE INSURANCE & AD&D | $20,000 Life policy and $20,000 AD&D policy
• LONG TERM DISABILITY | 66.67% of salary, up to $1,000 per month
• RETIREMENT | Enrollment in the Marin County Retirement System (MCERA) pension plan, a defined benefit retirement program
  • Tier 2 - hired on or after 7/1/2011: 2% @ 55, Average of 3 highest years
  • Tier 3 PEPRA - hired on or after 1/1/2013: 2% @ 62, Average of 3 highest years
• GYM MEMBERSHIP REIMBURSEMENT | Up to $198 per year
• BILINGUAL PAY (if eligible) | Up to $250 per month
