Job Description

Overview

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic Lead's primary function is to diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, structural, fuel, air conditioning, and hydraulic systems on light to heavy equipment according to safety requirements. 10% of the time the mechanic lead will assist the Foreman in supervising mechanics, creating, and assigning work orders, creating requisitions and Purchase Orders, updating the maintenance records system, communicating with vendors and customers, and reporting vehicle status to supervision.

Responsibilities

• Safely diagnose and repair vehicles and equipment using various techniques, tools, equipment, computers, platforms, and systems; to include, but not limited to, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical systems, body work, hydraulics, cooling systems, fuel system, tires, and exhaust system

• Assist Parts Department in requisitioning parts (when required) and maintaining status

• May be required to perform machinist and welding activities

• Maintain equipment by checking fluid levels, check for leaks, improper operation, adjust belts, adjust and repairs brakes, repair lights, replace hoses, lines and switches

• Clean out radiators and tracks

• Inspect and replace worn out fan belts, lamps and batteries

• Test and replace worn out water pumps, power steering pumps, alternators, and belt tensioners

• Repair and maintain vehicle air conditioning systems

• Inspect clutch, electrical wiring and Freon levels; all level of repairs

• Drive/operate equipment as needed for repairs, to and from vendors for service and repairs, and as a test for safety, to perform diagnostics, and to ensure repairs are complete

• Drive to different sites within the city limits for roadside services, mud pulls, jump starts etc.

• Coordinate the team's effort by completing work orders, filling in required data for work and entering data into computer

• Promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices

• Maintain work site for cleanliness and safety

• Act as Foreman in his/her absence

• Plan and organize staff to ensure proper operations, repairs and maintenance to vehicle and Equipment is completed

• Supervise maintenance repairs by establishing work priorities

• Communicate with City Department personnel concerning repairs to department fleet

• Make periodic inspections of all equipment repairs

• Provide operational and technical updates to the General Foreman

• May be asked to perform other duties as assigned

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

• Non-Exempt - Full-Time

• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement

Qualifications

• High School Diploma /GED

• Three (3) Years of Experience

Licenses and Certifications

Required

• A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire

Required within six 6 months of hire

• Forklift certification

Required within one (1) year of hire

• Class A CDL with x Hazmat Endorsement

• State Vehicle inspector

• One (1) ASE certification

Basis of Rating

A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications and may request additional information. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
