Job Summary

Heavy Duty Fleet Maintenance Technician I-IV

The City of Olathe is seeking qualified candidates for Heavy Duty Fleet Maintenance Technician I-IV positions to help maintain the vehicles and equipment that support essential City services.

A $4,000 hiring bonus is available for eligible candidates.

Heavy Duty Fleet Maintenance Technicians perform skilled maintenance, diagnostics, and repair work on the City’s heavy-duty vehicles and specialized equipment. This position supports essential City operations by keeping fleet assets safe, reliable, and ready for service. Work includes preventive maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, brake, steering, suspension, and drivetrain systems.

In municipal fleet maintenance, your work has a direct impact on essential City services every day. You are not just repairing vehicles and equipment-you are helping keep public works, utilities, emergency operations, and other city services operating safely and reliably for the community.

Positions may be filled at the I, II, III, or IV level based on the selected candidate’s experience, training, certifications, and demonstrated ability. While core duties are generally consistent across levels, the complexity of work, degree of independent judgment, and minimum qualifications increase with each level.

Technician Level Placement

Heavy Duty Fleet Maintenance Technician I
Pay Range: $21.75 - $28.90 per hour, depending on qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: 0 to 2 years of related experience. High school diploma or GED required. Related vocational or technical training may substitute for some experience or be considered qualifying preparation.

Heavy Duty Fleet Maintenance Technician II
Pay Range: $23.75 - $31.79 per hour, depending on qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: 2 to 4 years of related experience. High school diploma or GED required. Related vocational or technical training preferred.

Heavy Duty Fleet Maintenance Technician III
Pay Range: $25.50 - $34.97 per hour, depending on qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: 4 to 6 years of related experience in fleet, diesel, automotive, or heavy equipment maintenance. High school diploma or GED required. Technical training and job-related certifications preferred.

Heavy Duty Fleet Maintenance Technician IV
Pay Range: $28.00 - $39.06 per hour, depending on qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: 6 or more years of progressively responsible related experience, including complex diagnostics and repair work. High school diploma or GED required. Advanced technical training and certifications strongly preferred.

Placement within the technician level structure will be based on a combination of related experience, technical training, certifications, equivalent approved credentials, and demonstrated ability to perform the work at the expected level of independence.

Certifications and Equivalency

The City recognizes that candidates may demonstrate technical qualifications through a combination of relevant experience, formal education, trade school coursework, approved manufacturer or factory training, and industry certifications.

Equivalent credentials may be considered in place of certain preferred or required technical qualifications, as determined by the City.

EVT certifications may be preferred at the time of hire and, for certain assignments, may be required within 18 months of employment. Comparable or cross-credentialed certifications that demonstrate equivalent technical knowledge and skill may also be considered when evaluating candidate qualifications and technician-level placement.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

CDL Training

This position requires a Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements, along with a DOT medical certificate, within six months of employment. Employees in this role will participate in the city’s CDL Training Program. The city provides training resources and support to help employees prepare successfully.

The Fleet Maintenance Technician uses their technical expertise to perform complex skilled maintenance, diagnostics and repairs to automotive, light, and medium duty trucks, and a wide variety of equipment such as but not limited to tractors and lawn mowers to ensure the vehicles and equipment operate safely and efficiently. This position is part of a four-level career progression of Fleet Maintenance Technician I, II, III and IV.

Key Responsibilities


Qualifications

Experience:A minimum of three years of training and/or experience in Automotive and Equipment Maintenance and repair is required. Hydraulic experience preferred.

Education:A high school diploma or equivalent supplemented with course work in automotive technology is required. Trade school is preferred.

Licenses & Certifications:A valid driver’s license with favorable driving record is required. A class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement is required within 6 months of employment.

Environmental or Physical Demands: May encounter moderate noise levels from vehicles, equipment, instruments, or ventilation systems.
