Education and Experience : High School Diploma or GED, or higher, and four (4) years of experience in heavy/diesel equipment maintenance and repair; or graduation from a heavy/diesel equipment maintenance and repair program from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of experience in a heavy/diesel maintenance and repair including one (1) year in a lead or supervisory capacity.

Licenses and Certifications : Valid Texas Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or equivalent from another state by time of appointment.

Special Requirements : Positions requiring a CDL or positions of a safety sensitive nature are subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with federal regulations.

General Purpose

Under general supervision, perform senior-level repair and maintenance of heavy automotive equipment.

Typical Duties

Plan, assign, review, and assist with the repair of heavy vehicles and equipment. Involves: Perform and provide lead and senior-level expertise in the maintenance, care, and repair of the City’s heavy equipment. Perform mechanical work on equipment and oversee technicians, ensuring quality and completion. Complete major and minor repairs on a variety of machinery and heavy equipment in compliance with operations manuals and manufacturer’s specifications to ensure efficient equipment operation. Diagnose, troubleshoot, and determine equipment failures, identify issues, determine causes, and ensure appropriate repair by mechanics. Instruct and train employees in repair and maintenance methods and practices. Implement protocols, safety standards, and monitor adherence and application of policies and protocols. Inspect and test completed work to ensure repairs were performed according to standards. Assign work, track work orders, and provide direction and leadership to other technicians.

Supervise assigned personnel. Involves: Schedule, assign, and check work. Appraise employee performance and review evaluations by subordinate supervisors. Provide for training and development. Enforce personnel rules and regulations and work behavior standards firmly and impartially. Counsel, motivate, and maintain harmony. Interview applicants. Recommend hiring, termination, transfers, discipline, and other employee status changes.
