THE TEAM The Maintenance Division is responsible for maintaining the Port's Infrastructure and Port-owned facilities. Their crews include Roads and Streets, Landscaping, Plumbing, Electrical, Garage, Docks & Piers, Carpentry, Building Mechanical, Custodial, General Maintenance as well as a small office staff and warehouse. Their work is generally performed in response to work requests from other Divisions of the Harbor Department or for the Port's tenants on a for-hire basis.
THE ROLE Under supervision of Stores and Property Supervisor, the Storekeeper I NC supports the inventory Augmentation Project by overseeing receiving, stocking, issuing, items, and organizing materials within the warehouse and warehouse operating system, while ensuring safety, accuracy, and operational efficiency.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES HOW YOU GET TO CONTRIBUTE: - Participate in and oversee the ordering, receiving, inspecting, stocking, issuing, and reporting of inventory items and materials.
- Check quantity and quality of goods received for conformity with purchase orders, specifications, and inventory plus up requests.
- Determine proper accountability and safeguarding of inventory through accurate receiving, issuing, labeling, organization, and cycle counting practices.
- Maintain accurate inventory records; prepare inventories, conduct cycle counts, and generate reports.
- Determine storage procedures and oversee the physical maintenance, organization, labeling, and layout of warehouse areas.
- May be required to support and provide coverage for daily warehouse operations as needed.
- Ability to perform warehouse tasks while effectively utilizing a personal computer for data entry and inventory management.
- Operate forklifts and other material handling equipment safely and efficiently.
- Provide internal customer support to employees accessing warehouse materials.
- interact and correspond with internal and external Port customers, and Division employees at all levels, via phone, email, and in person.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILE EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE: - Minimum of two years full-time experience receiving, inspecting, storing, issuing, and accounting for a wide variety of supplies and equipment in a warehouse or storeroom environment.
- Experience maintaining inventory records, preparing inventory reports, and working in a structured environment with established storage and accounting procedures.
- Experience performing warehouse operations while using a personal computer for inventory control, data entry, and related administrative tasks.
- Knowledge of warehouse operations including ordering, receiving, stocking, issuing, inventory control procedures, inventory accountability practices, and record keeping systems.
- Knowledge of proper storage methods, space utilization techniques, warehouse layout optimization, and workplace safety standards related to warehouse operations and equipment use.
TECHNICAL SKILLS NEEDED: - Ability to obtain forklift certification upon hiring. This position will be required to operate forklifts.
- Ability to perform basic counting and inventory tasks.
- Proficient in utilizing personal computer systems to support warehouse operations, including inputs into inventory management system.
- Ability to maintain accurate inventory records and prepare reports.
- Ability to inspect goods for quality and compliance with purchase orders.
- Ability to read and understand written instructions, safety rules, inventory documentation, and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate clearly, courteously, and professionally with internal customers in English.
DESIRABLE: - Experience operating material handling equipment.
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- Bilingual skills a plus.
SPECIAL NOTE: This is an unclassified, "at-will" position. The appointed candidate will serve at the discretion of the Port of Long Beach and can be terminated at any time. In such an event, the candidate has no right to any appeal or grievance procedure under any rule or regulation of the City of Long Beach.
The non-career position typically works 20 hours per week and cannot exceed an average of 29 hours per week throughout the year, up to a total of 1600 hours in a year for a maximum of two years. Flexibility is offered within typical business hours. The assignment may end at any time, but under no circumstances will it extend beyond two years.
Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period, and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, Non-Career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.
