GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

A truly unique opportunity at a special site - 18000 acres of rugged and undeveloped land on the cleanest river in Texas.

Under the direction of the Site Superintendent and daily supervision by the Maintenance Supervisor, this position performs highly complex (senior-level) maintenance and construction work. Responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, and repair of facilities, grounds, trails, equipment and visitor services at Devils River State Natural Area. Assists with enforcing park rules, performs resource management tasks and assists with interpretive programs/special events. Performs administrative duties, prepares reports and provides a high degree of customer service. Coordinates and provides leadership to classified, hourly, and volunteer staff. Assists with matters relating to the preservation of natural and cultural resources coordinating with natural area staff, regional resource specialist, and TPWD. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.

NOTE: Located along the Devils River, staff should be comfortable operating kayaks & canoes, including overnight kayak patrols down the Devils River to conduct river/campsite maintenance. This position is based at the Dan Hughes Unit of Devils River State Natural Area located on Private Road 1500 which is approximately 1 hour (one-way) from Del Rio.



Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Education :

Graduation from High School or GED.

Experience :

Four years of facility, road, equipment or grounds maintenance experience.

Licensure :

Must possess a valid State driver's license.

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS :

Experience :

Thirty semester hours from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of the required experience, with a maximum substitution of two years.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

Experience :

Experience with a wide range of construction, repair, and/or the maintenance-related field.

Experience in vehicle, small engine, and heavy equipment repair.

Experience in customer service and/or public relations.

Experience in natural resource management practices and procedures.

Experience in trail construction and maintenance.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

Knowledge of basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical, janitorial and making minor repairs to park facilities.

Knowledge of water well repair, solar and electric.

Knowledge of park operations and maintenance practices.

Knowledge of general custodial duties.

Knowledge of basic mathematics.

Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook.

Skill in effective verbal and written communication.

Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner.

Skill in performing minor repairs to vehicles and other equipment.

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts.

Skill in the use of hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, vehicles, generators and other mechanical equipment.

Skill in heavy equipment operation and repair.

Skill in making independent, sound and timely decisions.

Skill in natural resources management and procedures.

Skill in sustainable trail building and management techniques.

Skill in working with and leading volunteers.

Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.

Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

WORKING CONDITIONS :

Required to work in a public park with overnight camping and day use.

Required to work 40 hours per week with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Required to work overtime as necessary.

Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.

Required to perform work in rugged remote locations in extreme temperatures.

Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 100 lbs.

May be required to operate a State vehicle.

Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays.

Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures.

Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
