About you:

As a Botanical Information Consultant, you will be responsible for responding to inquiries and requests for information and materials from the public, academic institutions, media, and industry. You will serve as consultants to private and governmental agencies on general horticultural and botanical practices, methods, and procedures, and act as departmental liaisons with garden clubs, botanical organizations, and private nursery entities. You will use your knowledge in the industry to investigate, analyze, and resolve horticultural and botanical issues.

Essential Job Functions

Answers questions from the public or departmental staff, regarding a variety of general botanical and horticultural concerns.

Acts as a consultant to both private and governmental agencies concerning general horticultural and botanical practices, methods, and procedures.

Acts in a liaison capacity between the department and various garden clubs, botanical or horticultural organizations, and private nursery concerns.

Lectures to garden clubs, botanical or horticultural organizations, or community groups on a variety of departmental activities and current topics.

Writes on botanical subjects for publication in in-house newsletter and flyers, trade journals and news media.

Assists in the coordination of flower shows and special horticultural and botanical events held at the Arboretum facility of the department.

May supervise a horticultural or botanical program or event held at the Arboretum facility of the department, such as the Arboretum Home Demonstration Gardens program.

Assists staff personnel in the identification of plant material submitted by the public.

Assists in the maintenance of field records and reports, and the Arboretum's plant records system.

Assists in the labeling of plants, propagation and expansions of collections.

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:
Graduation from an accredited college with specialization in botany, horticulture, or a related field* -AND- One year's experience in the dissemination of botanical information to the public in an arboretum, botanical garden, or horticultural establishment**. One additional year of the required experience will be accepted for each year of college to a maximum of two years.

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

**Horticultural establishment is defined as Tree Care industry; Interior landscape industry; Commercial nursery; Garden Center; Commercial Green house; Plant Conservatory; Landscape Firm

PHYSICAL CLASS:

2 - Light.- This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

EXAMINATION CONTENT:
This examination will consist of an evaluation of training and experience based on application information and desirable qualifications, weighted 100%. In order to be placed on the eligible list, candidates must meet the minimum requirements and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination.

ELIGIBILTY INFORMATION: The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be placed on the eligible list for a period of twelve (12) months.
