Description

Vacancy is in the Office of Sustainability. Under supervision, supports a variety of activities related to the implementation of the City's sustainability initiatives by collaborating with residents, nonprofits, government agencies, and foundations. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, able to work both in a team and independently, and ready to support transformative projects that protect Hartford’s residents from increasingly severe weather. Promotes the culture of sustainability by identifying methods for progressing the City’s sustainability performance. May initiate, manage, and coordinate a variety of sustainability-related projects that supports the Climate Action Plan and Sustainable CT certification in and among different City departments, as directed. Monitors performance of associated sustainability metrics within the Climate Action Plan, Sustainable CT certification, and other frameworks. Provides support, as needed, including on procurement-related matters (i.e. RFPs, contracts). Provides support with meetings including, but not limited to, notetaking, agenda development, adherence to legal reporting requirements, and technology logistics for virtual meetings, as directed. Advises the Mayor and other City officials on sustainability issues. Manages fundraising, grant writing, and grant administration efforts related to sustainability projects, as directed. Monitors sustainability-related changes in local, state, and federal law and policy. Identifies and pursues funding sources including federal, state, and private funds to support climate resilience, low impact development, green infrastructure, and other sustainability initiatives. Communicates with residents, nonprofits, government agencies, and foundations. Maintains and updates communication channels and materials, including, but not limited to, flyers, website content, videos, champion profiles, and social media posts. Attends and/or conducts City and community meetings on sustainability issues. Performs outreach under the direction of City staff and/or contractors.

This position is in the unclassified service and incumbent is appointed and serves at the pleasure of the Mayor in accordance with Chapters IV and V of the City Charter, and is also grant funded. The City is not required to fund the position if the grant funding expires.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

The examination will consist of rating your training and experience as contained on your application. It may also include a written test, an oral test, or a combination thereof. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. The examination will be designed to measure:

Work is performed primarily in an office environment with some travel to different sites. Incumbent may be required to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.

Qualifications

Open to all qualified applicants who meet the following qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with major coursework in Business Administration, Political Science, Public Administration, Urban Planning, Environmental Studies, Engineering, Project Management, Landscape Architecture, or a related field AND three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience in project management or working on sustainability initiatives.

OR

An associate's degree from from an accredited college with major coursework in Business Administration, Political Science, Public Administration, Urban Planning, Environmental Studies, Engineering, Project Management, Landscape Architecture, or a related field AND five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in project management or working on sustainability initiatives.

Required Licenses; Certifications; Special Requirements:
A valid driver's license is required.

Preferred Requirements
• Spanish language skills.

A COPY OF YOUR DIPLOMA OR TRANSCRIPT MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH YOUR APPLICATION. A DIPLOMA OR TRANSCRIPT SUBMITTED WILL BE VERIFIED BY THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT.
If selected, you will be required to pass a physical examination administered by a City physician, a drug and alcohol screening, and a background check. If appointed, you will serve 3-12 months of probation. This examination and employment process is subject to all federal, state, and municipal laws, rules and regulations.
